I'm starting a new job in January, and I'll be relocating to Espoo in the process. Now - coming from Romania - I admit that I don't really know a lot about Finland. I've been to Helsinki/Espoo once for a couple of days, and that + wikipedia is pretty much the extent of my knowledge.

So, any tips from the locals? Things I should know or prepare for? You know, like "don't eat the yellow snow"?

I had heard that it tends to be rather slushy in the Helsinki area. Here in Transylvania there's very little wind and no currents to speak of, so when it snows, it tends to settle; I'm used to winters looking like this:

Guess I'm going to need some new boots for the slush.

Last winter was pretty lousy, only a few weeks or proper cold and snow. Looks like the same shit again... everything's just grey, dirty and miserable.... and I live in Tampere. You're set all right if you can cope with the darkness - thankfully you're here in January and miss this horrible November so the spring's not far away.

That sounds perfectly conducive to creating good music. Have to find a way to take a guitar with me (that's one of the things I haven't managed to sort out yet).

Can take a guitar in a gigbag with you in the airplane. Majority of companies allow it.
If you wanna learn a language there then learn Swedish, that way they'll understand you in Norway and Denmark also. Take a spoonful of "tran" (fishoil) every day while the darkess lasts, lack of sunlight creates vit D defficiency which in turn can cause depression.

Air regulations mean they have to cater for taking an instrument on board, if there is no room in the cabin then staff put it in a special part of the hold, I brought one back on two flights and was OK with no bother, they're used to it.

As an Icelander that lives with near 20-24 hour darkness per day in the winter I highly recommend this!

Thanks for the tips. Fish oil seems rather gross, though - aren't there alternative pills or something with vit D supplements?
