I just can't stand playing without a limiter when I play bass. It's not always necessary when you play in standard tuning but I play in BEAD and can't turn my amp up loud if I don't use my limiter because the extreme peaks. And a limiter gives you more sustain too.

Hmmm I've been playing bass for a hell of a long time and never needed a limiter in any tuning. I have a feeling you may need to work on your picking technique.

Or use decent cabs. although I use valve amps which compress on their own now. High pass filter is probably a better way of saving cabs without altering your dynamics.

Avatar makes a pretty nifty two by twelve that's worth a look. Josh from Cerberus Rex uses two of them with a GK400RB and Kramer aluminum neck bass and it's pretty robust.

I'm just bumping this thread, 'cuz I don't want to make a new one. I'd like to get better speakers for my noname 4x10 cab and was wondering what you guys thought were worth checking out. I'm running a Peavey Mark 3 Bass head and a SC150B through it. Not at the same time, obv.

Speakers and cab need to be matched up, its rarely worth changing the speakers in a 4x10, because decent 10s are expensive, and you need 4 of them. Measure up teh cab volume and port, and can model them in WinISD.
